First time in NH

Well I was there in the latwe 60%26#39;s, but I%26#39;ve got a feeling things have changed....The wife and I will be staying @ Steele Hills Resort in Sanbornton 9/10-9/14. We%26#39;re both in our late 50%26#39;s with a lot of diverse interests. 1. Eats: doesn%26#39;t need to be fancy, just good for the $$$. Not to far from the Atlantic, so seafood would be a great inclusion (although we%26#39;re going to Cape Code from here for another 4 days, better to wait ?). 2. Things to see: The beautiful countryside is all around from what I%26#39;ve read; any %26#39;special%26#39; places ? Historic sites would be nice too. 3. Things to do: More for me, since the wife likes to sleep in while I%26#39;m up at the crack of dawn. Fishing is a high priority, though a boat rental would need to be included. What species are in the surrounding lakes ? Some light hiking would be great too. Any suggestions would be appreciated and since Trip Advisor has the most knowledgeable and friendliest forum, my expectations are high. Thanks. btw; anything about Cape Cod (Port Dennis and surrouinding) would be great.

First time in NH

I am interested in the responses you get. My time is spent in the mountains, so I am not familiar with the Lakes region. Looking at the Steele Hill website, it looks wonderful and the site has alot of information about things to do in the area. I can tell you that it is a beautiful area. As you probably know, On Golden Pond was filmed on Squam Lake.

With only 4 days and I am sure part of those will be traveling, I will make a suggestion for a 1 day trip.

You should go up 93 to the Kanc and across to N Conway, spend a little time in town (forget the outlets- I am sure you have them in Chicago), go to Zeb%26#39;s. On your way North go to Mt Washington. turn into the covered bridge for Jackson. Have lunch at the Wildcat tavern. Take a van trip to the summit if you have time and the weather is cooperating. A short walk to Glen Ellis falls by Pinkham Notch. Then back track to 302 and drive thru Crawford Notch. Stop and take pictures. Walk thru the Mt Wash Hotel. continue east to rt 3. If you have time, the flume gorge is a great walk (need at least 1 1/2 hours). Then you can take 93 south back to your base. It is a long day but worth it but your wife will have to get up early.

There are so many things to do and you can%26#39;t do them all.

As for the Cape, I assume you mean Dennisport and not Port Dennis. It is in the middle of the Cape and a great place to go to the Upper or Lower Cape.

You will be after the season has ended so it should be quiet. Hyannis is nice but missable unless you have to go to the Kennedy Memorial (IMHO). The 6A side of the Cape is very different than the honky tonk 28 side with all the touristy stuff. Neat antique stores, Old Captain%26#39;s houses and the like.

Provincetown is a great town to visit for the day with a walk along the national seashore park. In the other direction there is Woods Hole. Another suggestion is a day trip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard from Hyannis. There is a MV island shuttle bus that will take you to all six towns.

Lastly, if you are going to be on the cape, you have to have the belly -not strip- clams and soft shell steamers.

First time in NH

Meredith has some very good restaurants, all of them. Good shops also. Hike West Rattlesnake off of Rte 113 out of Holderness, it is a short hike overlooking Squam. Also the NH Science Center on 113 in Holderness is great. The Vineyards Restaurant on Route 3 is very good in Belmont heading into Laconia. I do not fish so I have no clue. I%26#39;ll be thinking of more.
