First Fall in NE

Hello,

We are planning a trip to NE this fall also. It is our first north of Boston. We%26#39;ve done Niagara Falls when we%26#39;ve visited our daughter in Pittsburgh so just doing Vermont, NH and Maine this time. Where are you staying in Conway? We are trying to decide between Franconia and Conway. Thanks

When in the fall are you coming? Fall colors vary greatly depending on where you are and when you come.

That%26#39;s a very ambitious itinerary. Without knowing what you like to do, here are some things I really like along the way but clearly there is a lot you will not have time for. I will try to stick strictly to things along your route.

After seeing Niagara Falls, follow the river up to Niagara-on-the-Lake and spend a few hours walking the town. It is very quaint and scenic near the river.

Driving across to Watertown means going through Toronto. A trip to the top of the CN Tower is a treat and Casa Loma, a castle with 98 rooms is impressive to say the least (www.casaloma.org).

Dipping back down to Watertown means crossing the St Lawrence at Thousand Islands. My wife and I crossed there once when going from Ottawa (another nice city with some excellent museums and lots to see and do) to Cleveland and we regretted not having some extra time to stop and explore. It was gorgeous and I cannot recall having seen another place quite like it. I cannot give you specific suggestions but would recommend researching this area before your trip.

If you are driving Route 3 across the Adirondacks, you will be passing close to Lake Placid. It is a great little town and of course has hosted the Winter Olympics twice.

In that more Northern area of Vermont, Burlington is a nice small city to walk and if you are an ice cream fan, you could take a tour of Ben %26amp; Jerrys in Waitsfield which is fun and tasty!

From Littleton, a drive around the White Mountains including a drive up Mt. Washington%26#39;s Auto Road is a rite of passage (or you could take The Cog railway. I personally don%26#39;t see the big attraction to North Conway...a touristy outlet town but it is one of the termini o the Kancamangus Highway which is a beautiful scenic drive (don%26#39;t know when you are coming but it can be pretty crowded in this area in the fall.

From there to Saco and beyond is definitely not my area of expertise so I will leave it to others on the board. I will mention Portsmouth, NH is a wonderful coastal city and a lot of fun!

thanks for the information, I know it is a crap shoot, but I picked to arrive in Buffalo Sept 30th and flying out of Manchester on Oct 7th? We shall see?
