NH experts please advise. I always warn people against driving too much so be sure I%26#39;m not. Also am I missing any must sees. Thanks!
Oct 3-5- Tour White Mts (Kanc and Cog RR, Franconia State Park) drive over to Stowe/Saint Johnsbury, VT.
Oct 6-7- Tour Bar Harbor and Acadia NP.
Oct 8- Drive down coast of Maine to Kennebunkport and Ogunquit.
Oct 9- Tour Boston (am walking tour, pm Boston duck tour), drive to Nashua, NH.
Oct 10- Fly out of Manchester at 2 pm.
Revised Fall Trip Plan
If you%26#39;re starting in the White Mtns and only have three days there, it doesn%26#39;t make sense to go west to VT and then back east the next day all the way to Bar Harbor. That%26#39;s a full day drive from NH. Skip VT.
Revised Fall Trip Plan
Thanks RedRox- didn%26#39;t know about the time and distance.
Notwithstanding your plea to NH experts, I am putting in my $.02. I have spend a number of weeks in the WM and rarely do the same thing twice. This summer I am planning a trip to Arcadia and probably will not get to everything I would like that week. So, RR gave you excellent advice about skipping Vt (just on this trip- it is worth a week on its own).
You need to plan this trip with military precision. The cog is the better part of a day. You should stop and go in the MW Hotel while you are on that side of the mountain. I don%26#39;t remember if you hike but Aruthusa falls should be spectacular if it has been a rainy fall (tallest waterfall in NH but a pretty decent hike- the way back is easier)
Flume Gorge is a must IMHO, can be done in a hour but you can easily stay for 1/2 a day to really enjoy it.
You should take a gondola ride at Cannon or Wildcat Mtns.
You can catch the view from the top of Cathedral ledge. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g46186-d10… This is right near Diana%26#39;s Baths.
Glen Ellis falls and Lost pond are right near Pinkham Notch. Lost pond is a very short easy hike to a beautiful pond where if you are lucky no one else will be with great views to the Ravines.
Jackson village and falls are must see places.
NC village has some great shops beginning with everyone%26#39;s favorite, Zeb%26#39;s to a real 5%26amp;10 to the NH Guilds craft shop (which is also a don%26#39;t miss in my book- if you are lucky there may be glassblowing going on while you are there)
After all this, if you have time and get lucky, sitting outside with a cocktail and just watching the changing mood of MW is mesmerizing (maybe that%26#39;s %26#39;cause of the cocktail).
I think you will be able to fill up your 3 days.
And you still haven%26#39;t stopped by Lake Winni in any of the towns that dot the water%26#39;s edge among many other places.
Mapquest has your drive from Conway to BH as 222 miles and 4.5 hours which kills a day unless you leave after a full day of sightseeing and don%26#39;t have time for a beer at Moat Mtn brewput or Red Parka Pub,etc.
Thanks TA experts. We will get up early and drive to Bar Harbor on Oct 6. Hopefully be there by early afternoon so time to explore Bar Harbor then do Acadia the next day.
Whoa Neslaw! You just gave them a week%26#39;s worth of plans to cram into 3 days!
Seriously, everything that Jeff recommends is a must do, but with only 3 days you%26#39;ll probably not be able to do it all. Maybe with the precsion that is required, but that%26#39;s why you%26#39;re planning. Getting to the summit of Mt Washington should be the priority, but only if you have the weather to make it happen. So be flexible around that, and if the forecast is favorable, drop everything else and go do the Cog that day.
I understand that there is no way to do all I suggested. That was kind of the point. CeCe- I think that you mentioned you were driving from Ga. It is incomprehensible to me that anyone would do all that driving in such a short time. You know what you like way more than I do. Just leave room for some fun other than seeing how many license plates from different states you can identify.
NO we are not driving from GA. We only drive in the SE US otherwise we fly. We are flying into Manchester early am on Oct. 3.
Ok, makes a little more sense now. Still, just take some time to stop and smell the flowers.
That is a lot to fit into one week, but I wouldn%26#39;t completely write off a day trip into Vermont. As wonderful as the White Mountains are, Vermont offers a completely different kind of scenery that is also among the most beautiful in New England. Just keep your options open. ;)
On the other hand, with your timetable you%26#39;ll be a little early for the peak foliage except in the upper mountains, so spending more time in the White Mountains is probably wise.
How rigid is your schedule on the 9th? It would be shame if you didn%26#39;t make at least a quick stop in Portsmouth to see Strawberry Banke and the downtown area.
While in Maine visit the lighthouse Portland Light in Portland and Nubble Lighthouse in York. Really nice.
