Hello Everyone,
My family and I are planning another camping trip to the white mts. we are thinking the middle- to end of july for a friday to monday trip.
Our needs are ...
secluded tent camping for 1 large%26lt;huge%26gt; tent and 1 small tent.
stuff for my 11yo to get into at the camp or around.
my husband really wants a site that is very close %26lt;touching lol%26gt; to our tent.
he has this need to do the mt washington road thing so not too far from there would be awesome.
any ideas?? I ahve checked a couple of campground but I can%26#39;t %26#39;see%26#39; the sites so I get nervous about being 2ft from the site next to us.
thanks in advance!
Need help finding the perfect campground
Ha - for my wife, camping is the red roof inn. But check out the appalachian mountain club site. also,don%26#39;t just drive-- consider hiking at least part of MW
Need help finding the perfect campground
There are great campgrounds along the Kancamangus Highway which runs from Rt 93/Lincoln to Rt 16/Conway area. These are State run so they are very rustic... some without showers. There is a quieter campground on Rt 302 called Dry River, also State run (I think). Private campgrounds are all around the area... cost a little more but have more ammenities.
A nice ride is Rt 93 to exit 32/Lincoln. Follow the Kancamangus Highway about 3/4 of the way to Bear Notch Road. Take Bear Notch to Rt 302, take Left onto 302 and follow back to Rt 93. Beautiful ride thru 2 notches... be sure to visit the Mount Washington Hotel... some great hiking trails along the entire route. If you follow the Kancamangus to the end, you will have to go thru North Conway to find Rt 302. There is a lot of traffic thru that area but also some great outlet shopping if that is of interest to you.
Enjoy!
thank you both for the input. :-)
I agree with one of the posters that your best bet is finding a campground along the Kancamagus Highway, on the east side. Since you need to be near Mt. Washington I think the best campground is Dolly Copp which is right up the road from Mt. Washington. Wooded sites, very big for an 11 year old to explore, and a little more room between sites than some of the RV campgrounds (which you couldn%26#39;t pay me to camp at). Unfortunately, it%26#39;s very hard to find a ';secluded'; campsite anymore, especially with RVs being all the rage (my experience camping near RV campers has been bad...lots of noise, all kinds of loud electronic ';toys,'; etc). The best camping for seclusion is along Tripoli Road (exit 31 off of I93). Very rustic. No bathrooms. No amenities, and at most sites, you need to carry your gear down an embankment...but the sites are beautiful. Sometimes, though, you get a group of loud ';young %26#39;uns'; camping nearby which can be as irritating as the RV%26#39;ers.
Campsites fill up fast during the summer on the weekends, so be forewarned. =)
We have camped at the Franstead Family Campground in Franconia and really enjoyed it. Some very nice spots along the river and on the far side, some are faily secluded. Very well run place.
We always camp here:

Close to Mt. Washington, Kangamangus and North Conway. We love it there!
Our sites remain primative but you would be a bit further north. Dolly Copp is an excellent suggestion, you will be literally right there.
While your at it check out the zip line at Wildcat Mtn the 11yo will LOVE it!
Travel Well!
The campgrounds on the Kancamangus Highway are actually Federal campgrounds, not State. Since it is a National Forest. They have a listing of the various campgrounds with maps and amenities for each at the US Forest Service Website, which apparently is not working, but should be soon. www.fs.fed.us/r9/white/recreation/camping/
I agree that Dolly Copp is a good option. We have stayed several times and liked it.
If you want to go in June, though, I would STRONGLY recommend making an advance reservation. I believe you can do this on-line.
