We have refined our itinerary after receiving some very good advice. We are trying to cancel our 2 nights in Falmouth (hotel still have replied to any of our e-mails a week later)- and spend 4 nights in Boston - then go to our rental house.
Here is new itinerary.
Arrive in Boston 30th June
Overnight in Jurys. 1st to 4th July - explore Boston.
4th July - pick up hire car. Travel out to Chatham. Travel to rental house in Chatham for 7 nights.
11th July. Leave Chatham early. Travel to North Conway, New Hampshire. Overnight in Nordic Village Resort for 3 nights.
This bit is open to change or suggestions seeing as we now have addditional time due to cutting Boston at the end.
14th July to 17th July. Leave North Conway. Travel to Portland Maine (Embassy Suites - provisional) Any suggestions for these last few days now that we are not so tight on time??? We return to Ireland late on Fri night.
Sorry if it is messy/bitty - thought I was organised!!!
Revised itinerary
You totally left no time to visit Niagara Falls--- Just kidding. Trip looks like alot of fun. Only serious comment. Hopefully, you have some plans to experience a NE 4th of July celebration, whether in Boston or on the Cape and did not make it only a travel day. That would be a shame.
Revised itinerary
I am worried seriously that we have crammed too much travel in - before I plan any activity!!! Let me know if you think I have. We will be in Chatham on 4th July - I am so preoccupied with getting out there early on 4th I have given little or no thought to what we will actually do on the day/evening itself. Any suggestions - a nice dinner and fireworks would be lovely.
Any ideas as to what would be good after North Conway - would like Portland but I am a bit concerned there isn%26#39;t enough to do in the area (3 nights).
If you are getting to Chatham early, then there are a number of fireworks displays in the various towns. I would post on the Cape Cod board for specifics. I don%26#39;t know how you are with crowds, but the fireworks in Boston and the Boston Pops concert beforehand are a great experience. You really have the ability to choose between the big extravaganza or the small town celebration (which won%26#39;t be that small.
As for Portland, it is not my area of expertise, but there are a number of coastal areas well worth visiting including Kennebunkport, Bar Harbor, Portsmouth or traveling to Rockport. (In fact, my family%26#39;s vacation this year will be spending a week along the Maine coast up to Acadia National Park.) These can be day trips of various lengths depending on how far you are willing to wander from your base. If this were my trip, I would want my last days to have a relatively short ride back to the airport to minimize any of the unforseen problems of traffic, accidents, car breakdowns, etc which can ruin the best laid plans.
