Car Hire

I am just getting around to booking a rental car for our trip to Boston/Cape Cod/NH in July. Any suggestions?

We wont use it in Boston - just to get out to Cape and the rest of our trip - over 2 weeks. Got a few quotes - Hertz, Avis, Dollar. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, I see gps (sat nav) works out at about 14 euro per day - I could almost buy one for that I%26#39;m sure. I have a Becker GPS at home but I cannot seem to be able to source USA maps.

Again any advice on this - much appreciated.

Car Hire

I like to use Hotwire.Com or Priceline.Com for car rentals.

Car Hire

I am going to say Hotwire.com as well, especially if you don%26#39;t care which company you rent from.

You might be better off just buying a cheap GPS unit, you can get them for under $100 now.

newegg.com has several listed for that price.

We hired a car in Boston in January and drove to North Conway. We decided to stick with Hertz as it was a well known name. We had no problems. We decided not to hire a GPS as it was so expensive. We printed out maps from Via Michelin and we also bought a road map. We didn%26#39;t get lost once, the signposting is very good, so I wouldn%26#39;t bother with the GPS.

You might be able to save some money on your GPS by uploading some US maps in to your GPS that you already own.

FYI- The GPS sometimes acts erratic when you start it up near tall buildings, in tunnels or in covered parking garages since the GPS signal is lost. Double check with a map if need be.

biancat,

Any of those companies - Hertz, Avis, Dollar, or even National, Budget, or Thrifty - would serve you just fine. They%26#39;re all reputable, and unless you%26#39;re a ';frequent driver'; with any of them, the service you%26#39;d get would be about the same from any (though I found Dollar to be particularly unhelpful when I used them a couple of months ago).

That%26#39;s pretty expensive for sat nav. I%26#39;d be surprised if you can%26#39;t get US maps somewhere for your Becker, or couldn%26#39;t find a less expensive alternative here.

Hope you have a great trip - I%26#39;ll be trading places w/you; will be in Ireland (including Cork!) in July.

Thanks Yankee. I am going to get one on newegg.com - only about $99 - and I can sell it later (or use it for another trip - even better). Thanks for all the advice.

Where are you going in Cork - any help, tips etc. you need - just give me a shout. I have been helped so much by all the kind contributors on T/A - I would be more than happy to help anybody else here. We would not have been able to plan this without you all.

Checked out our own GPS system - they want 拢100 sterling to update European maps - God knows what they would want for USA. I think the best option is to buy a GPS from Newegg - and have it posted to friends of ours in NJ - they can then post it to us, before we go. Madness, but it is saving us over $100 and we own a unit at the end of it all.
